> For NY asphalt track history, information, pictures.... from the past to the present! I've lived my life at race tracks, and I definitely have racing in my blood. My grandfather raced Midgets and Sprints up and down the U.S. Eastern Coast on dirt tracks primarily from 1937 until 1952, and my father raced dirt Late Models in the early 1970's. My father also sponsored "Gentleman" Gene Schulz of Ransomville, NY in the 1980's at Lancaster Speedway - where Gene was the Street Stock champion in 1982, 1983, and 1984 in his #60 Chevrolet Chevelles. Gene also was the 1984 Perry Street Stock champion. Gene's four sons have started their racing careers in the 1990's. Dave Schulz, the oldest, ran the 2000 season on the asphalt at Lancaster and WCIS with a #6O blue and white Late Model after spending six very successful years on the dirt. I wrote the "Historical Happenings" column for the Lancaster program in 2001. I've also written a column for the Wyoming County International Speedway program titled "Pitside At WCIS". With that introduction, here we go with my attempt at this! ENJOY!!! NY Track Spotlight
First up: Wyoming County International Speedway (the former Perry Speedway) - a 1/3 mile track in Perry, NY >This track started out as a dirt track, was paved, went dirt for a second time after covering the pavement, and is back to running again as an asphalt facility. The James Majchrzak family bought the track in late 1997 and also changed its name from the Perry Speedway to Wyoming County International Speedway or WCIS. The Asphalt Modifieds returned to the track after 15 years as part of the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour. J.R. Kent in his #16 convincingly won both 50 lap Modified races that have been contested on his way to his two championships in the series in 1998 and 1999. George Kent captured the 2000 Modified win for a return to victory lane since he last won in 1978. For the record, it has been a dirt track for 21 years and an asphalt track for 21 years in its 42 years. Famous names that have graced victory lane at the track include Maynard Troyer, George Kent, Don Biederman, Roger Treichler, Brett Bodine in his only Street Stock year of 1977!, Junior Hanley, Gary Iulg, the durable Art Clark, Dick Flaig, Billy Griffin, Doug Hewitt, Merv Treichler, Buck Catalano, Bill Cane, Kenny Troyer, Jerry Gradl, Brian Horn, Tommy Gesel, Ron Wylie, Tony Jankowiak, Steve Hoddick, Jerry Krieb, Mike Ticco, Rick Wylie, and Doug Depew. Richie Evans, Dutch Hoag, Tommy Druar, Jerry Cook, Jim and Charlie Rudolph, Don Pratt, Jim Reid, Pete Gesel, and Jan Leaty also have logged laps here as well. Mike Scroger holds the distinction of capturing 6 Street Stock titles in an 8 year span! in his potent #92 Chevrolet Monte Carlos - the most of any driver in the track's history. Bob McCreadie set the track qualifying record of 14.871 seconds, approx. 80.6 m.p.h. - set on July 23,1978 in his #1 Pinto Asphalt Modified. The versatile veteran Ron Williams became a winner at the track in the five decades the track has existed ('60's-'00's) with a win in the Limited Modifieds being registered on May 5,2000. He has captured many victories in Late Model and Street Stock competition - with his last trip to victory lane being the last asphalt show on June 16,1985 before the 1999 additions. 2001 found the racing action returning to Saturday nights. MIKE SCROGER #92 by Mark W. Southcott The name that is synonymous with Perry Speedway is probably Mike Scroger of Basom, NY originally. Six Street Stock titles were claimed by him and his powerful #92 Scroger - Prentice Auto Parts Chevrolets. He has the most championships of any driver in the history of racing at Perry. Between the years of 1976 and 1983, only the 1979 and 1980 Street Stock titles weren't claimed by Mike - and he didn't miss it by much those years either. It isn't surprising to know that Mike stated that he loved Perry; it was definitely his favorite track to race at! Any Street Stock driver that ever ran Perry in the late 1970's until the track went dirt in June of 1985 knew that they would have to contend with and defeat the #92 ride of Mike. Mike ended his racing career in 1985 with a total of seven track championships to his name. >Mike's most successful year in his racing career was the 1978 season. In addition to claiming his third Perry title, he won the Lancaster Speedway title and finished second to champion Brian Horn in points at Spencer Speedway. He also won at all three tracks during the year. The Scroger #92 blue Monte Carlo also claimed the impressive NEARA Street Stock Championship over many notable New York drivers. The NEARA title was comprised of asphalt tracks that gave points toward an overall championship. Street Stock drivers ran at Perry, Lancaster, Spencer, Shangri - La, and Fulton in its last year of asphalt racing for the 1978 title. Mike ran the circuit of Spencer on Fridays, Lancaster on Saturdays, and ended with Perry on Sundays. Brian Horn in his #20 Monte Carlo finished second to Mike, and Dave Seils was third in the final points in the #51. Mike also captured the title chase over drivers Buck Catalano #54, Darryl Moser #71, Randy Scott #26, Frank Chapman Jr. #89, his fellow Scroger - Prentice teammate Knute Carlson #81, John Julicher #9, and Terry MaCauley #82. Mike also won a 40 lap race at Cayuga Speedway in Ontario, Canada on August 6, 1979. >1983 saw Mike claim his last wins and final Perry title. He won a 50 lap race in July and nailed down numerous second place finishes in his last full year at Perry. Mike also visited victory lane at Lancaster for the last time on August 6, 1983 in his white #92. Mike's wife Jodie also claimed a Perry title in 1983 in the Women's Pure Stock class with the Dale Scroger #92 - which won the Pure Stock title for Dale that year too. Mike's car was sold after the 1983 season to Dave Engle who ran it in 1984 as the #57. Perry didn't run a race in 1984 until August. Mike had relocated to Florida by that time. Mike returned to New York to race his last season in 1985. A white and blue Chevrolet Malibu was put together quickly for Perry action. The track ran six shows, and then it was turned into a dirt track in June. Mike had a best finish of fourth in the shortened asphalt season at Perry. Mike wasn't keen on dirt racing, even though his one time teammate Russ Prentice in his #29 had switched to it in 1983. Mike returned to Lancaster to finish out his career. The closest he got to victory lane there was a second place finish on August 17, 1985. >Mike ran at the Pocono, PA Race of Champions National Parts Peddler Street Stock Championship four times on the 3/4 mile. The first year of the event in 1981 was won by Tom Gesel in his #21, and Mike started 45th after winning a consi - finishing 47th with his renumbered #82 Chevelle. 1982 brought him his first of two consecutive finishes in the top 5. The #92 finished a close 3rd behind winner Brian Horn in his #61 and Jan Leaty in his #52 after starting from 8th. Mike came across the line in 5th with his #92 after starting 8th again behind the 1983 winner - the #20 of Jerry Gradl. Mike ran the last race of his career in the September, 1985 edition. He qualified through one of the consis to start 49th. Mike's last race produced a 41st place finishing position with his renumbered #90. Long Islander Pete Eriksen in his #68 Camaro won his first of three Pocono Street Stock Championships in the 1985 40 lap race. >Mike has lived in Florida for about ten years. After his Street Stock racing career ended fourteen years ago with numerous wins, Mike still fondly remembers the great times he had racing at Perry and other tracks. The white #92 car that Mike Scroger campaigned in 1982 and 1983 out of the Scroger - Prentice stables is still one of the best looking cars that I've ever seen hit a local asphalt track! I can still see Mike racing into that first turn and then capturing another checkered flag.....
~Many thanks to Mike and his sister Carol Prentice for taking the time out to talk with me and research information. I really wanted to do this profile on Mike and the #92 team up right.
